Trying something new is easier when you know what’s coming. This guide walks through a first reflexology appointment, from booking to leaving, so nothing catches you off guard.
Before you book
Check your health first if you need to. Reflexology is a hands-on relaxation session, not medical care. If you have a condition that affects your feet or circulation, a recent injury, an open cut or infection on your feet, or you’re pregnant, talk to your health care provider before booking.
Pick a time that won’t leave you rushing. Thirty minutes goes quickly. Arriving flustered and checking your phone eats into it, so book a slot that leaves a little space either side.
What to wear
Anything comfortable. Reflexology is done on bare feet, so you’ll take off your shoes and socks. Trousers or leggings that roll up to the ankle make things easier. You don’t need to change out of your clothes.
When you arrive
Smiling Feet NYC appointments take place in Bushwick, at a space we share with Adrenaline Sports Massage. The address is on our homepage, with a directions link.
Before the therapist starts
Your therapist will want to know a few things, so be ready to mention:
- anywhere on your feet that’s sore, injured or ticklish
- any foot or health condition you think is relevant
- whether you like lighter or firmer pressure
None of this needs a long explanation. A sentence or two is enough.
During the session
You settle into the chair and your therapist works through both feet by hand. Reflexology uses steady pressure from the thumbs and fingers on specific points, so it feels slower and more precise than a general rub. If you’re unsure how the two differ, see reflexology vs foot massage.
Some spots may feel tender. That’s common, but tender shouldn’t mean painful. If anything feels uncomfortable, tell your therapist straight away.
You don’t have to talk. Some people chat; many close their eyes. Either is fine.
Is 30 minutes enough?
For a first visit, a 30-minute appointment is a short way to find out whether you like reflexology without committing to an hour. Our appointment is for foot reflexology only. Some other listings bundle extras such as soaks or hot stones, so check what’s included wherever you book. (For how prices compare around Brooklyn, see what foot reflexology costs in Brooklyn.)
Afterwards
Take a moment before you stand up and put your shoes on. If anything about the session didn’t suit you, such as the pressure or a particular spot, tell your therapist so the next one fits you better.
